Blogging using criteria

As you begin to blog about The Breadwinner  remember to refer to your criteria sheet. Creating a powerful response needs to include a passage or quote that clearly shows persecution occurring in the novel. This quote/passage needs to have made you react strongly in some way - angered, frustrated, devastated, in disbelief. Copy the passage/quote directly from the novel and include the page number it can be found on. Explain your feelings and emotions you felt when reading this and explain why. Go into detail as this will show a deeper level of understanding. A powerful response also needs to included connections. As everyone is now on their second novel, maybe more, you can connect to what you have already read. What is similar or dissimilar about the characters, about the events? Finally, leave off by asking a deep thinking question. What do you wonder about, what questions do you have? It might be about something we have talked about in class and you have been thinking about it, wondering about it? Maybe it is something that has occurred in the novel and you would like to hear others' opinions. This is the time to ask.

  1. Pg 42 I was confused when the guards just stared at them when parvana's mother was calling out I'm here for my husband over and over. I though the guards would arrest the mother but instead they kept hitting her with his gun. Just like in Number the stars Anne-Marie was on a mission to get to her uncles place but a guard wouldn't let her go.

    1. I was confused too, because why wouldn't they let her father go? Also why would they stare at her?

Mother worked quickly. First she cut off a huge chunk in a straight line at her neck. She held it up for Parvana to see.
I was pretty much surprised that Parvana said yes to cutting her hair short. I thought she would say no.
    T-S
I had a T-S connection because I remember was I was maybe 5 years old and I put bubble gum in my sisters hair. So my mom had to cut my sisters hair and she actually looked like a boy.
    Question:
Will the boy outfit and hair make Parvana look like a real boy or will it just fail?

    1. I also didn't think that Parvana would say yes to cutting her hair that short but I guess she knew how important it was for her to work and get money to support her family while her father was in jail. Would you agree?

    2. Yes I would agree because I got short hair and i'm a boy(Man)

  3. Pg 87 My sandals are to tight because I haven't been out in a year so instead I have to wrap my feet in cloth and buy proper sandals tomorrow. I could just imagine what it would be like in the year 2012 and still having to wrap your feet in cloth because if that was the case I would just stay home. I was kind of surprised.
T-S I always have too small sandals when I wear them in the summer so their just sitting their all year.

  4. Throughout the entire book you have to look and think: All of the men must have a woman in their family that they care about, so that means that absolutely everyone doesn't like the governments laws. So why didn't the people retaliate/revolt? They could have overrun the ruler and forced him to change the laws, but instead everyone sits around and listens to them even thought they have majority. In Canada if we don't like something that affects use hugely, then we call a vote for a new leader and all is back to normal. Reply to tell me what you think.

  5. "Parvana was laughing and looking the other way when a tea boy tripped on something near her and spilled the tray of empty tea cups all over her blanket. the boy sprawled in the dust in front of Parvana. she helped him gather the cups that rolled away. she handed him the tray and saw saw his face for the first time. she let out a gasp and slapped a hand across his mouth... the tea boy was a GIRL from her class". this part in the book confused me a little, how would her friend know that that was Parvana? why is she copying her idea? if she didn't have any boy clothes then she would have to buy some and she would be questioned by the store owners.is she doing this to earn money like Parvana?

  6. SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Maryam ran to put on her sandals. ''They're to tight!'' She started to cry. Mother explained to Mr. Weera. She hasn't been outside in over a year''Of course, her feet have grown.''
Bring them to me and dry your tears,'' Mrs. Weera told Maryam. The sandals were plastic, all in one piece. ''These will do for Ali soon, so I won't cut them For today, we'll wrap your feet in cloth. Parvana will buy you proper sandals tomorrow. she will be out in the sunshine everyday,'' she said to mother. ''But never mind. Now that i'm here,we'll soon have this family whipped into shape!'' She tied several layers of cloth around the child's feet.-Pg 87
The skin will be tender if she hasn't been outside in a long time.
I was astonished when I read that because people were that poor that if their shoes or sandals don't fit they have to wrap their feet in cloth.
T\S I always have sandals that are to small because only wear them in the summer so when I put them on their to small and I have to buy new ones.

I also had an "oh wow" moment, it would be so hard to live in a place where you couldn't just buy new shoes if your old ones got small, you would have to wrap your feet in cloth. It makes me sad to know that some people in this world have to live like that.

This part of the book also made me tear up. I couldn't imagine having all my family killed and watching dogs eat the remains of them and other people. I wouldn't be able to handle any of it, its so hard to think that so many people around the world have to deal with this kind of stuff.

(By the way you had a few spelling and punctuation mistakes)

While Parvana and her friend and all those other boys are digging up bones and selling them to other people what do those people use them for? I know they might give them to their dogs but other than that what would they use them for ? I was wondering for a while when I read that book

    1. This is definitely one part of the book I was continuously reading to find the answer to the question: What would happen with the bones? In the book, Shauzia said that the Bone Broker would sell the bones to families. But what would the families do with the bones? Would they have another purpose? Or would families just sit, staring at bones all day.

I think he takes the bone Sales them to people that make art or for study of the human boby.

"I'm not sure this is a good idea," Parvana said to Shauzia the next morning. She had her blanket and her father's writing things with her. She hadn't been able to tell her mother about going bone-digging, so she didn't have a reason to leave her usual work things behind.

When I read this passage I was shocked that people in Afghanistan or maybe in other places dig bones for money. Are they really that disparate for money?

Is Parvana really going to dig Bones with Shauzia?
What will Parvana's Mom do when she finds out that Parvana is digging bones for money?

  10. Spoiler alert!!!

The part when parvana started to drive away with her dad this made me think of a lot of questions. How are they going to get back, will they find her mom and sister, will her dad live or die, will she ever see her family again. If you could reply that would be awesome :) .
